Career progression

Durham University

(2018 - 2021) BA, Economics with Management - 2:1

I was Treasurer of the Durham Uni Rifle Club. This meant I controlled the finances of the rifle club, working with the Captain to ensure that the club was not spending beyond its means. I also conducted reconciliation of accounts using the accounting software Xero. I was able to use experiences like this in my CV!

I was also a Research Analyst in the Finance Society Investment Fund, an active member of the college badminton team and did swing dancing.

In my penultimate year I secured a summer internship as a Strategy & Investment Business Analyst at a boutique investment firm. I took part in numerous projects and produced details reports using financial analysis. I was able to bring this experience up and explain what I learnt in detail at my FTI interview!

FTI Consulting

(2021 - present) Forensic and Litigations Consultant

Day in the life

We interviewed Chao on what he experienced during a typical day at work. This section is to provide you with an insight into what it's really like to work as a Graduate Forensic & Litigation Consultant at FTI Consulting.

Wake up

In the morning I would wake up at 8, get dressed and aim to get to the office around 9am. If I’m working from home then I’d wake up as close to 9am as I dare! I’d go to the kitchen area to grab water, tea or coffee, and some snacks to get me through the morning.

Daily tasks

In the morning I would check my email for any new updates. Then maybe have a meeting with my project team/manager for a summary of work done and debrief of what I will need to do. Most pressing/challenging tasks would take priority and I aim to get through as much as I can. Lunch time would be spent socialising with colleagues and having free food on Thursdays! In the Afternoon I would be hard at work on asset tracing, checking transactions, verifying data etc. This will be done working with excel, I2, and other softwares.

Finish

I normally finish between 5:30pm to 6:30pm, go to the pub with some colleagues, or go straight home! During busy seasons or projects you would expect to finish later as deadlines approach, but generally it is quite relaxed.

Evening work

Only when the project I am on is approaching a deadline will I have to work evenings. As a junior, you wouldn’t be expected to pull long hours as you don’t have the experience/knowledge to do every bit of a project.
