Application process for Summer Intern at BlackRock

Virtual Cover Letter

The requirements were a CV and virtual cover letter. The virtual cover letter consisted on 2 questions:

  • Why the role/division/company? (along those lines)
  • tell me something not on your CV

How to respond for success

For the virtual cover letter - the second question, I tried to relate it somehow back to the division I was applying for, just to tie it all in together.

Expect a 1-2 month wait before advancing to the next stage.

Situational Judgement Test

In this stage you are faced with a series of situational judgement questions.

Example

Expect questions such as: Tell me about a time where you thought of an innovative solution?.... I also got asked why the company and that role, and a recent news topic/technological advancement

How to respond for success

Prepare answers to questions in advance. Research typical questions for interviews within the division you’re applying as well as standard behavioural questions and write up bullet points, use the STAR technique! Dress well for the interview and be early in case there are technical issues - I had technical issues for one of mine but thankfully had enough time to reach out to recruitment to let them know.

Expect a 1-2 month wait before advancing to the next stage.

Technical Interview

Similar to that of interview 1, it was roughly 20-30 minutes, but focused more on the company and technicals.

Example

Mainly questions about the company, why you chose it etc, as well as why that division. Also recall being asked what a mutual fund is - which is basically information that was on the BlackRock page.

Final Interview

It was about 30-40 minutes. I only had one final interviewer. I prepared the same way as I did for the others but just made my answers more in depth.

Example

Behavioural questions were asked but way more in depth - really had to explain each scenario, reactions and discuss how you dealt with the situation. Questions are asked back and forth after every scenario given.

How to respond for success

I wrote up practice answers before but I think it would be best not to say it as though you memorised it - rather just remember the key points and explain the answers how you would do anyone else.

Expect up to a 1 month wait before being offered the role.
